Unto This Last :)

Unto This Last is the tittle of a book written in 1860 by John Ruskin. He advocated a return to the local craftsman workshops, having a few doubts about the human cost of the Industrial Revolution.

When I used to live on East London I was very curious about that name of a furniture store on the 230 of Brick Lane. Unto This Last? What the hell did it mean? I thought my knowledges of the language were not that far... The store captivated me from the outside but when I entered in I couldn´t help falling in love with it. I don´t know if it was the smell of wood taking me back to my childhood when I used to ask for resto of wood to the capenters in my neighborhood, maybe the clean spaces or just the vibes of the philosofy of this guys but I felt calm and secure like I do in certain places such Marni or some Churches.

Thanks to today´s technology the tittle of John Ruskin´s book, Unto This Last became a team of artisans who make distributed manufacturing happen -with a competitive edge.

Its designs are very personal and with a nordic touch: very clean and pure lines, good materials, craftmanship, small productions and on top of that, resonable prices. You can buy from a chair or an original bedside table to a cute tray, all made in strong laminated wood having the option of getting everything in different colours!! Basically they use a special birch ply composite throughout in order to get edges they can polish to a smooth finish. Their software optimises the use of each sheet with smaller products (trays, little candleholders, cook spoons...) to spread the cost of materials and reduce waste (eco friendly idea and it let them have prices close to the high street!!). The studio is just behind the store on Brick Lane so sometimes you can also watch the guys working on new furnitures.

They say: “We design along a single principle; less dependence on heavy industrial processes, more use of innovative digital tools adapted to the small workshop”.

I already got the Facet Chair Oak I am sitting on now in the corner of my living roon which became my little studio in London ;)

Unto This Last es el título de un libro que escribió John Ruskin en 1860 donde abogaba por la vuelta a los talleres de artesanos locales, lo que causó un gran revuelo estando tar reciente la Revolución Industrial.

Cuando vivía en el Este de Londres me intrigaba el nombre de una tienda de muebles en el 230 de Brick Lane; ¿Unto This Last? ¿Qué significa eso? Pensaba mis conocimientos del inglés no daban para más... El caso es que ya desde fuera me llamaba la atención, pero cuando entré en la tienda fue amor a primera vista. Me trasnmitió un poco esa sensación de sosiego y protección que siento en otros lugares como Marni o algunas Iglesias. Quizás fuese por su estética tan limpia, por el aroma a madera que me traslada a las carpinterias de mi barrio a donde iba de pequeño a pedir “tacos” para hacer el fuerte de los indios, o quizás se respire la buena filosofía de quien alli trabaja.

Tomado del título del libro, Unto This Last ha derivado en un grupo de jóvenes artesanos que gracias a la tecnología de hoy pueden permitirse una fabricación artesanal a precios competitivos. Sus diseños son muy personales y con un aire nórdico: líneas limpias y puras, acabados sedosos, calidad en los materiales y la ejecución... ¡¡y además buenos precios!!

Trabajan con laminados de abedul que les permite acabar y pulir sin problemas cualquier pieza angulosa. Además, gracias al software que utilizan para el corte de las piezas, aprovechan los “sobrantes” para objetos más pequeños como bandejas, útiles de cocina, posavasos...

El taller está en la misma tienda de Brick Lane y muchas veces puedes ver a los chicos trabajando en nuevos muebles (muy interesante ver la ejecución de estas piezas tan de cerca).

Para el equipo de Unto This Last su diseño de basa en un principio fundamental: la apuesta por las nuevas herramientas digitales adaptadas al trabajo artesanal huyendo de lo industrial y producciones en serie.

Yo ya me he hecho con la silla “Facet Chair Oak”, en la que estoy sentado ahora mismo en este pequeño rincón del salón de mi casa y que es ahora mi estudio en Londres :)
