SPITALFIELDS LIFE

It is very well know how much I love London and how in love I am with East End in particular with Spitalfields, the neighborhood I used to live. When I moved to Spain forwork last year, I discovered www.spitalfieldslife.com, a wonderful web where The Gentle Author writes about the history of that wonderful and kind of secret place in London. Whe the book came out I was so excited (I love better things I can touch and smell) and just last month I had the honor of meeting The Gentle Author in and exhibition and he signed the copy of the book I got right there. The book is cosy, beautifully ilustrated and full of people telling their stories. People from one of the poorest areas in the city that has recycled itself through the efforts and the illusion of which there have grown or have just simply fallen there by chance. Get your book and enjoy the web :)
Well done Gentle Author ;)

MilkConceptBoutique (The Clerk´s House)

Couple of days ago the sun woke me up at 6am, it was so shinning!!! :) So I decided instead of work in, do it out so I walked all the way down from home to Shoreditch to have a look around the cute shops, get inspired and enjoy the beautiful weather (after lunch it changed and it hasn´t stop rainning in two days :S).
I did let myself to pop into the Milk Concept Boutique, a very little cute shop right next to Shoreditch Church  in the 18th century house (The Clerk´s House). You can buy here decoration, clothing, yewelry... from very nice designers. The shop is full of Fornasetti items (not my cup of tea but interesting to see) and different cute objets and shoes.
I saw the gorgeous classic repetto shoes I always wanted and because I am off to Istanbul next week for work, I thought they were the perfect shoes to brig with me ;)
So if you find yourself around Shoreditch and you want to visit a nice shop with nice things in and a very friendly staff, you have to stop in Milk Concept Boutique at The Clerk´s House and enjoy the experience ;)

Unto This Last :)

Unto This Last is the tittle of a book written in 1860 by John Ruskin. He advocated a return to the local craftsman workshops, having a few doubts about the human cost of the Industrial Revolution.
When I used to live on East London I was very curious about that name of a furniture store on the 230 of Brick Lane. Unto This Last? What the hell did it mean? I thought my knowledges of the language were not that far... The store captivated me from the outside but when I entered in I couldn´t help falling in love with it. I don´t know if it was the smell of wood taking me back to my childhood when I used to ask for resto of wood to the capenters in my neighborhood, maybe the clean spaces or just the vibes of the philosofy of this guys but I felt calm and secure like I do in certain places such Marni or some Churches.
Thanks to today´s technology the tittle of John Ruskin´s book, Unto This Last became a team of artisans who make distributed manufacturing happen -with a competitive edge.
Its designs are very personal and with a nordic touch: very clean and pure lines, good materials, craftmanship, small productions and on top of that, resonable prices. You can buy from a chair or an original bedside table to a cute tray, all made in strong laminated wood having the option of getting everything in different colours!! Basically they use a special birch ply composite throughout in order to get edges they can polish to a smooth finish. Their software optimises the use of each sheet with smaller products (trays, little candleholders, cook spoons...) to spread the cost of materials and reduce waste (eco friendly idea and it let them have prices close to the high street!!). The studio is just behind the store on Brick Lane so sometimes you can also watch the guys working on new furnitures.
They say: “We design along a single principle; less dependence on heavy industrial processes, more use of innovative digital tools adapted to the small workshop”.
I already got the Facet Chair Oak I am sitting on now in the corner of my living roon which became my little studio in London ;)
Are you up to get your wonderful piece too? I´m thinking my next will be the bedside table ;)
