CANONBURY

It has been a while...a long while since my last post, and I have to admit that I have very much missed writing and being "the Spanish boy in London" but I have found it very difficult to cope with everything. Work has been hectic and very demanding and I just felt I had to commit to it. Now, to my surprise, I got back the energy and inspiration to share "my London" with the ones I love. The little pockets that remind me everyday why I am so in love with this city.

More that three years ago, when I came back from Spain with my English I really wanted to live close to Newington Green. We managed ;) and to my surprised I discovered an area of London that really got my heart, Canonbury. It is a part of my neighbourhood that I just LOVE. Everyday or every time I can, I just go there for my daily walk. The Georgian style remains in every single corner; the beautiful and elegant houses, the roses growing in Canonbury Square and my favourite, Canonbury House :) Walking around it is so inspiring, so relaxing; every house has a history, George Orwell or Francis Bacon had lived here. If you live in London or you just come to visit, go to Canonbury and walk around, you won't be disappointed ;) Ah!! If you are lucky to come in spring, you will enjoy the smell of roses on the streets while blooming. It is just magical.

So nice to be back!!!

Ha pasado much tiempo desde mi último post y tengo que admitir que he echado mucho de menos escribir en el blog y ser "the Spanish boy in London" pero me ha sido muy difícil el encontrar la inspiración necesaria. El trabajo últimamente ha sido muy absorbente y consideré que tenia que dedicarle toda mi energía. Para mi sorpresa, me han vuelto la inspiración y las ganas de escribir y contaros los pequeños secretos y rincones que me hacen enamorarme de Londres cada día ;)

Hace mas de tres años, cuando regresé de España tras una temporada fuera por trabajo, le dije a mi inglés que quería vivir cerca de Newington Green y así lo hicimos. La cierto es que me llevé una sorpresa increíble cuando descubrí una parte del barrio que desde el primer día me enamoró, Canonbury. Cada esquina de este barrio destila historia y estilo: las elegantísimas casas de estilo georgiano, los jardines de Canonbury Square cuajados de rosas, las farolas...todo!! Pasear y perderme por sus calles es un lujo que trato de regalarme casi a diario... nada me inspira más que los paseos desde casa atravesando Canonbury y bajando Upper Street hasta llegar a Angel. Mi rincón favorito es sin duda Canonbury House, una maravillosa y extravagante mansión del siglo XVIII. Personajes como George Orwell o Francis Bacon han vivido en la zona.

Si vivís en Londres o simplemente estais de visita, dad un paseo por Canonbury y sus calles, no os decepcionará ;) y si venís en primavera os deleitareis con el aroma a rosas que inundan en esta época del años todos los jardines de Canonbury ;)

Me alegro de estar de vuelta!!

SUNDAY ROAST @ THE ENGLISH RESTAURANT/SPITALFIELDS

The English Restaurant in Spitalfields is becoming the place for me and my English for the Sunday Roast (kind of what paella represents to Spanish people). Even though East London is too busy on the weekends I am too attached to it so I like walking around on Sundays and enjoying the food. The English Restaurant has a very good Roast Beef and I really enjoy there as the space is beautiful, calm and the service is very very good. Also the prices are not bad. Having a walk around the area, explore the markets and enjoying a roast beef in The English Restaurant on a Sunday is just the perfect plan. You'll let me know ;)

The English Restaurant en Spitalfields se está convirtiendo en el sitio por excelencia para tomar el Sunday Roast los domingos (lo que para los españoles sería la paella del domingo). Intento evitar el Este los fines de semana porque está lleno de gente pero la comida en este restaurante me encanta. El sitio es muy acogedor, muy "inglés" y el servicio muy muy bueno. Los precios no están mal y el sitio no se llena de turistas ;P Os recomiendo el plato de ternera (roast beef) con toda la guarnición (patatas y verduras horneadas también). Y una ginger beer ;) el plan perfecto para el domingo: un paseo por el Este o por London Bridge y un Sunday Roast en The English Restaurant de Spitalfields. Ya me contareis ;)

Spanish Boy In Istanbul (IV)

Another trip to Istanbul, the city that thanks to work and the wonderful people I work with is becoming my home more that a place to visit. There are a lot of options to do in this amazing and magical city and today I am gonna recommend you the ones for me are a must. Let's start...

The best fish I've ever had is in Rumelihisari Iskele in Bebek by the Bosphorus, with beautiful views of the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge.
We normally have a "sushi night" every week and always in SushiCo in Nisantasi, so fresh and delicious sashimi :P

On Saturday night you have to go for dinner to Balikcilar Pazari in Besiktas, a very old fish market surrounded by lots and lots of little restaurants where you can taste delicious fish and famous turkish "tapas" and of course do it with Raki, the typical drink ;)

A good plan for the day is walking around Ortaköy visiting all the stalls with typical crafts and have a break to enjoy a filled big potato ;)

The best köfte (meat balls) served with piyaz (haricot bean salad), in Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi.
I love SALT Gallery in Karaköy and ARTER Gallery in Taksim.

My favourite places to walk and get lost in Istanbul is Karaköy, Galata and Beyoglu... in Beyoglu you have to visit Çivan boutique and get a beautiful shirt ;)

Also visiting the Asian part by boat is highly recommended and come back when it gets dark which make the journey absolutely magical.

Estambul es una ciudad que se está convirtiendo en mi hogar más que un lugar de visita. Hoy quiero recomendaros algunos de los lugares que más me apasionan o inspiran y también donde mejor se come ;) Empecemos...

El mejor pescado lo he comido en Rumelihisari Iskele en Bebek; no sé qué tiene el pescado en Estambul pero sabe como en ningún otro sitio; quizás sea esa mezcla del Mar Negro y el del Mármara... en fin, este restaurante además tiene unas vistas maravillosas al puente de Fatih Sultan Mehmet y está a orillas del Bósforo...increíble.

Nuestras "Sushi nights" siempre son en SushiCo en Nisantasi donde el sashimi es muy fresco y delicioso.

Para el sábado por la noche nada mejor que ir a cenar a cualquiera de los barecillos que rodean el antiguo (y aún en uso) mercado del pescado Balikcilar Pazari en Besiktas y no olvidéis acompañar la cena con la famosa bebida Raki ;)

Un buen plan para el dia es pasear por Ortaköy y comprar alguna artesanía en sus muchos puestecillos y parar a comer una patata con guarnición también a orillas del Bósforo.

Una de mis galerias favoritas está en Taksim y es gratis Arter Gallery y también es digna de visitar Salt Gallery en Karaköy.

Las mejores albóndigas turcas (köfte) servidas con ensalada de judias (piyaz) en Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi.

Mis zonas preferidas de Estambul para pasear y perderme son Karaköy, Galata y Beyoglu (una al lado de la otra). En Beyoglu teneis que visitar la boutique de Çivan y comprar una de sus maravillosas camisas ;)

FLOWER MARKET/ COLUMBIA ROAD

Yesterday when I woke up and "my English" open the blinds, the sun came into the room creating a beautiful light on the withe sheets. Too gorgeous to be in. So we took the bus and went to the Flower Market (I needed to see colours). I don't know if it was the sun, the company or what but I found the Flower Market more beautiful than ever!!! Lots and lots of colourful flowers around Columbia Road announced the season coming, SPRING!!!! :D

It keeps being one of my favourite places to go on Sunday mornings, I never get bored of seen the flowers, the colours and the cute florists selling the bouquets for a fiver or a tenner. For a Spanish boy in London is like being in a movie or something :)

Cuando me desperté ayer y "mi Inglés" abrió las cortinas, el sol inundó la habitación reflejando la luz en las sábanas blancas. Demasiado buen tiempo como para perder la mañana en casa. Hacía muchísimo frío pero también un sol que no pillamos con mucha frecuencia en Londres. Así que cogimos el bus y nos bajamos al Flower Market. No me canso de ir a este mercado los domingos por la mañana; me inspira el ver tantos colores y a los floristas vendiendo los ramos y gritando las ofertas por "a fiver or a tenner" (£5 ó £10) por unos maravillas flores o plantas (muy exótico para un Spanish boy in London). No sé si fue el sol o la compañía pero ayer el mercado lucía más bonito y vibrante que nunca. Infinidad de flores y colores inundaban Columbia Road anunciando que la primavera está a la vuelta de la esquina :)

Spanish Boy In Istanbul (III)

My last weekend in Istanbul I wanted to explore a little bit more of the Old Istanbul. I asked Adil to show me something very old, very real far from the pompous and the richness so he and Secil took me to Fatih and Fener neighborhoods. I have to say it was one of the most intense experience I've had in Istanbul. I saw a lot of poverty but also a lot of desire of improving. Everybody was working on something and was very welcoming. The textures and colours on the streets are amazing in this areas (old, decadent... real). 

And now a little bit of history... Fatih is one of the biggest district in the heart of Istanbul known as the Old Neighbourhood or the Real Istanbul. It borders the Golden Horn to the North and the Sea of Marmara to the South. From the 18th century onwards due to earthquakes and fires, Fatih lost most of its wooden houses in the historical area. A large portion of the middle class residents moved to the Anatolian side and other parts of the city. Fatih today is largely a working class district, but being a previously wealthy area, is well-resourced. Fener is a neighborhood midway up the Golden Horn within the district of Fatih. The streets in the area are full of historic wooden mansions, churches, and synagogues dating from the Byzantine and Ottoman eras. After the Fall of Constantinople in 1453, the Fener district became home to many of the Greeks in the city. The Patriarchate of Constantinople moved to the area as well and is still located there. 

And this is the area we walked all the way through to the Galata Bridge to eat a delicious fish ;)

Aprovechando my último fin de semana en Estambul, pedí a Adil que me llevase a algún sitio realmente exótico, al verdadero Estambul. Así que me llevo al barrio donde nació, Fatih y Fener. Estos barrios me han parecido espectaculares; los colores, las texturas que he visto aquí no los he visto en otros barrios de la ciudad. También tengo que decir que vi mucha pobreza, pero a todo el mundo se le veía trabajar con alegría y el lugar te da la bienvenida y te hace sentir cómodo.

Y ahora un poco de historia ... Fatih es uno de los mayores distritos en el corazón de Estambul, conocido como el Barrio Antiguo o el Auténtico Estambul. Limita al norte con el Cuerno de Oro y al sur con el Mar de Mármara. A partir del S.XVIII debido a los terremotos y los incendios, Fatih perdió la mayoría de sus casas de madera en la zona histórica. Una gran parte de los residentes de clase media se trasladó a la zona asiática y otras partes de la ciudad. Fatih es hoy en gran medida un barrio obrero, pero al ser un área previamente rica, dispone de recursos. Fener es un barrio a mitad de camino hasta el Cuerno de Oro, en el distrito de Fatih. Las calles de la zona están llenas de viejas mansiones históricas de madera, iglesias y sinagogas que datan de las épocas bizantina y la otomana. Después de la caída de Constantinopla en 1453, el barrio de Fener convirtió en el hogar de muchos de los griegos en la ciudad. El Patriarcado de Constantinopla se trasladó a la zona y todavía se encuentra allí.

Y esta es el área que descubrí hace un par de domingos y que atravesé hasta llegar al Puente de Galata donde almorzamos un delicioso pescado con vistas al Bosphorus ;)
