Just where I live with "my English" :) and one of the most beautiful and relaxing places to visit not only for its bucolic beauty but for its history. Church Street was first noted in 1329 and was recorded as Newington or Newton Lane in 1403; then Church Street in 1576 and Stoke Newington Church Street from 1937, making it the longest street name in Greater London.
There are two gorgeous churches on the street, both named Saint Mary's. The oldest was built in 1563 and was partially rebuilt in the 19th century and in 1950s after bomb damage during the World War II. The second church is the impressive mid-Victorian Saint Mary's New Church with its 250 foot steeple. Also on the other side of Church Street is located Abney Park Cemetery, a beautiful garden cemetery and arboretum.
Clissold Park was built in the lattest half of the 18th century for Jonathan Hoare, a City merchant, Quaker, philanthropist and anti-slave campaigner. It was created to be his ydill as he kind of wanted to be surrounded by a very bucolic environment. Now the park became the Heart of Hackney and has beautiful lakes, a little canal and a tiny farm with birds, goats, chickens and gorgeous deers. Just walking down Church St you will find lot of public houses or pubs like the Daniel Defoe pub (named after the author of Robinson Crusoe, who lived nearby), the Fox Reformed and many more. The street is also home to a wide range of independent shops and boutiques offering unusual craft items, jewellery and clothes. Aquí es donde vivo con "my Ingles" :) uno de los sitios más bonitos y relajados para visitar en Londres, no sólo por su belleza sino por su historia. Allá por 1403 llamada Newington o Newton Lane fue en 1576 cuando se la empezó a llamar Church Street y en 1937 pasó a llamarse Stoke Newington Church Street y a ser la calle con el nombre más largo de todo Londres.
En Church Street se encuentran dos maravillosas iglesias, ambas llamadas Saint Mary. La más antigua se construyó en 1563 y ha sido parcialmente remodelada en el S.XIX y en los años 50s tras los bombardeos de la Segunda Guerra Mundial. La otra, la impresionante Saint Mary's New Church data de mediados de la época victoriana y su torre y campanario alcanzan los 250 pies de altura. Más abajo tenemos el cementerio Abney Park Cemetery que es además un jardín botánico.
Clissold Park es un maravilloso y extenso parque que se ha convertido en el "Corazón de Hackney"; fue construido a mediados del S.XVIII por Jonathan Hoare, un comerciante de la ciudad, cuáquero (perteneciente a la Sociedad Religiosa de los Amigos), filántropo y defensor de la abolición de la esclavitud. Hoy en día podemos disfrutar de los preciosos lagos que tiene el parque, el pequeño canal y su granja con cabras, aves y cervatillos :) Si seguimos bajando Church Street encontraremos cantidad de pubs que han hecho famosa a esta calle y entre ellos uno de los más importantes podría ser el Daniel Defoe (llamado así ya que el autor de Robinson Crusoe vivía aquí ;) el Fox Reformer o el Ryans Bar son también muy buenos. Son muchas las tiendas independientes que ofrecen aquí productos totalmente artesanales desde ropa hasta joyería o muebles.
